Lough Hyne
Knockomagh Summit
This lovely little hike is located just a few km outside of Skibbereen. Situated right beside Lough Hyne and along the Wild Atlantic Way, its peak offers stunning views of the lake but also the surrounding farms and islands. Along the way you can also encounter a ruin of a dry stone house and there’s even a blueberry bush right near the top if you get a bit peckish (make sure you know what they look like before eating). This would be the perfect choice for someone just starting off or for someone who wants a nice easy hike.
Gear
The hike is pretty easy only 2km to the summit and another 2 back. You wont need any gear as there are steps along the way but if the weather gets bad some of the track might get muddy. The summit is between 190 to 200 meters above sea level. Some of the inclines are a little steep but the short distance makes it very easy to make it to the top. All this means youd need very little gear, maybe some wellies if it gets too muddy but thats about it.
The Research Center
If you reach the top during high tide youll notice that theres some water flowing into the lake. Thats sea water. Lough Hyne is Irelands only salt water lake. In 1981 it became Europes first marine nature reserve. In 1952 two laboratories were built on the lake shore and another in 1987. This is the research center in Lough Hyne.
The reason This lake is so well researched is because of its biodiversity. The lake gets fresh sea water twice a day at high tides, introducing new marine life but also sheltering it. This creates a unique ecosystem allowing different species of marine life to thrive.
Where it Starts
This hike is located a few minutes outside of Skibbereen. Just head for Lough Hyne and park wherever you can. There are a few laybys you could leave your car but actual parking is pretty limited (about 4 or 5 spaces). After parking just follow this narrow road heading south west along the lake. Youll see this sign for Knockomagh Summit. This is where the hike officially starts, however there is a starting point right at the car park, they both take you to the same place anyway so take your pick.
